HP1 - Deleted Scenes

Among the many deleted scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, one of the most intriguing is undoubtedly the cut moment from Professor Snape’s Potions class. While Severus Snape made an unforgettable impression in the final cut, a portion of this iconic scene was left on the cutting room floor—and it’s a real gem for fans.

Even More Tension Between Snape and Harry

In this deleted scene, Snape’s hostility toward Harry is even more evident than in the version we all know. After his chilling monologue about “the subtle science and exact art of potion-making,” Snape takes things further by humiliating Harry even more in front of the class. The scene adds an extra layer of discomfort for the young wizard and intensifies Snape’s intimidating presence.

Some fans believe this moment could have better highlighted Snape’s underlying resentment, as well as his conflicted feelings about Harry—who reminds him so much of the past he wishes he could forget.

Why Was This Scene Cut ?

As with many film adaptations, scenes are often trimmed for pacing or runtime. In this case, it’s likely the filmmakers wanted to avoid a tone that felt too harsh early on, especially for a movie aimed at younger audiences. Still, many fans feel this scene would have added extra depth to Snape’s character and heightened Harry’s sense of unease during his early days at Hogwarts.
